Ready to Tackle Tobacco:
PDP’s Regional Technical Assistance and Training Centers
In conjunction with the launch of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services’ (OASAS) Regulation Part 856—which effectively creates tobacco-free services in New York’s chemical dependency programs—Rockefeller College’s Professional Development Program, University at Albany, announced that its new Regional Technical Assistance and Training Centers (RTATCs) are ready to tackle tobacco.
“We’re essentially creating a network of support for the recovery community,” said PDP’s Executive Director Eugene J. Monaco. “We will provide classroom training, technical assistance, e-learning, and experts in tobacco to help this OASAS initiative succeed. And most importantly, we have skilled and willing partners all over the state to also help us.”
The RTATCs are Depaul’s National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence—Rochester Area, BRiDGES in Canastota, the Center for Addiction Prevention and Education (CAPE) Dutchess County in Poughkeepsie, Cicatelli Associates in New York City, and Outreach Training Institute, Queens. The Professional Development Program serves as the RTATC for the Northeast region, in addition to providing project management and oversight for all the regional centers.
On July 24, 2008, the regulation took effect, and OASAS Commissioner Karen M. Carpenter-Palumbo said, “Today, more than 1550 prevention and treatment programs begin the road to tobacco freedom. With the help of the Department of Health and PDP, individuals served within our addiction services will reduce their risk of relapse, improve their health and enhance their long-term recovery. This collaboration with DOH and PDP is going to make a tremendous difference in the lives of the 110,000 individuals in our system on any given day.”
