The Tobacco Interventions Project
With the enactment of the Part 856 Tobacco-Free Services Regulation on July 24, 2008, New York became the first state in the nation to require its Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) licensed and/or funded chemical dependence service programs to implement tobacco-free environment policies and to provide tobacco dependence education and treatment interventions. To support successful implementation of the regulation, the New York State Department of Health Tobacco Control Program funded the Professional Development Program, Rockefeller College, University at Albany from 2008-2009 to develop curriculum, provide statewide training and technical assistance, and design online versions of our classroom training modules in a highly interactive, easy-to-navigate environment.
Over the two-year lifecycle of the contract, the Tobacco Interventions Project and network of Regional Technical Assistance and Training Centers provided training to 5,624 New York addiction professionals and technical assistance to 23,823.
While classroom training and technical assistance services are no longer offered, our online resources are available:
- Manuals, slides, and video files from the Exchange's five-module, 21-hour curriculum, Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions into Chemical Dependence Services are available for free download.
- The Exchange's Implementation Toolkit contains do-it-yourself resources addiction service providers can use to implement integrated tobacco use interventions into their programs.
- Appropriate for addiction and allied health care professionals, the Exchange's online training at the e-Learning HUB provide certificates and free CASAC, CPP and CPS credentialing credit.
By learning new information about tobacco dependence and applying evidence-based practices, addiction professionals can significantly improve the quality of addiction treatment and make an unprecedented contribution to the health and well-being of people in recovery.
