About the Curriculum

Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art curriculum that motivates, educates, and empowers addiction and allied health professionals to integrate evidence-based tobacco interventions into prevention and treatment programs. Developed to support New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) certified and/or funded chemical dependence service programs implementation of OASAS Part 856 Tobacco-Free Services Regulation, the twenty-one hour curriculum contains five modules that cover many aspects of tobacco-free chemical dependence services. Each module has a Trainer Manual, a Participant Manual, and, PowerPoint slides. (Module 5 also includes video files.)

Module 1 - The Foundation: Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services

This half-day workshop provides a common core of knowledge about tobacco use and tobacco dependence. The workshop helps participants explore their attitudes and beliefs about tobacco use, discusses the history and rationale of addressing tobacco dependence in addiction services, similarities and differences between tobacco and other substance dependence, and reviews the requirements of OASAS Part 856 Tobacco-Free Services Regulation. Target Audience: Appropriate for all program staff. Previously approved for OASAS Credit: 3.5 hours CASAC, CPP and CPS

 

Module 2 - Assessment, Diagnosis, and Pharmacotherapy: Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services

This half-day workshop introduces participants to screening tools for tobacco use and dependence, addresses assessment of change readiness, reviews diagnostic criteria of tobacco dependence, withdrawal, and reviews nicotine replacement therapy. Target audience: Counselors, clinical supervisors, nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff who provide counseling or therapy services. Previously approved for OASAS Credit: 3.5 hours CASAC, CPP and CPS

 

Module 3 - Behavioral Interventions: Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services

This full-day skill-building workshop reviews staged-based interventions including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy and relapse prevention strategies for treating tobacco dependence. Participants also learn tobacco awareness engagement topics and activities and practice through role-play facilitating psychoeducational tobacco awareness groups. Target audience: Counselors, clinical supervisors, nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff who provide counseling or therapy services. Previously approved for OASAS Credit: 7.0 hours CASAC, CPP and CPS

 

Module 4 - Treatment Planning: Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services

This half-day workshop reviews the knowledge and skills clinicians need to provide effective tobacco dependence treatment. Participants learn the comprehensive components of a treatment plan that integrates tobacco use interventions; and using a case study, participants practice writing a treatment plan that incorporates their newly acquired knowledge. Target audience: Counselors, clinical supervisors, nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff who provide counseling or therapy services. Previously approved for OASAS Credit: 3.5 hours CASAC, CPP and CPS

 

Module 5 - Co-occurring Disorders: Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services

This half-day workshop addresses the challenges presented when treating patients who have a co-occurring substance use and mental health disorder. Topics covered include the prevalence and negative impact of tobacco use on people with co-occurring disorders, basics of neurobiology of mental health and substance use disorders, evidence-based tobacco treatment interventions, and pharmacotherapy. Participants apply their new learning using a case study activity. Target audience: Counselors, clinical supervisors, nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff who provide counseling or therapy services. Previously approved for OASAS Credit: 3.5 hours CASAC, CPP and CPS
